Summary: The Controller is responsible for supporting the mission of SpArc Philadelphia by managing all aspects of the accounting function of the organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, regulatory and funder requirements and nonprofit management best practices.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing payroll.
  • Prepare various financial metric reports for the Senior Management Team and the boards.
  • Assists the CEO in the development of budgets and ongoing monitoring of expenses against budget.
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable. 
  • Coordinate preparation of monthly financial statements in accordance with the GAAP and all related reporting for tax filing and planning.
  • Guards confidential information. 
  • Knows and is in compliance with funder requirements and regulations.  Remains current with regulatory changes that would impact accounting practices.
  • Prepares financial data, reports and information required to effectively complete annual independent audit. 
  • Develop operations, policies and procedures for accounting department.
  • Analyze cost of services.
  • Immediately reports any discrepancies, suspicion of illegalities including any financial irregularities to the CEO. 
  • Reconcile all company bank accounts.
  • Work with external auditors to finalize the annual review.
  • Assist with the annual budgeting and re-forecasting process
  • Preparing and developing departmental and staff goals.
  • Evaluating and implementing internal accounting controls as needed.

Staff Management 

  • Hires, motivates and leads a performing accounting team committed to and capable of driving the goals of the organization. Mentors and develops staff to ensure a core team focused on the priorities of the agency.
  • Fosters a customer-centric, accountable environment within the agency accounting department.
  • Ensures effective performance systems are in place for all staff that includes annual evaluation and ongoing systems for performance feedback. 
  • Models core competencies of the organization and hold others accountable to do the same.
  • Conducts regular meetings with management teams and departments to ensure that priorities are clear, coordination is good and communication remains open.

Qualifications

  • MBA Preferred or equivalent plus 10 years of progressive career track including experience in a Controller position.
  • Sage 100 exp. is a plus.
  • Experience with federal OMB regulations preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in all facets of financial and operational accounting including, A/P variance analysis, project management, treasury, taxation and overall financial reporting.
  • Combination of public accounting & private company experience strongly preferred.
  • Clear criminal and child abuse history, medical and drug screen.
  • Willing and capable of working with minimal support staff. Ideal candidate is able to provide strategic guidance to the CEO & Board and perform basic book keeping task.
  • Strong computer skills in all Microsoft office applications, especially spreadsheets. Proficient with accounting software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Requires self direction, independence, good time management, organization skills, attention to detail and the ability to prioritize.  
  • Hires and develops a caliber staff capable of providing high quality services, accountable to job responsibilities and motivated.
  • Ability to multi-task and be in control of numerous tasks at any time.
  • Ability to translate regulations into practice.  Knows the importance of effective record keeping.
  • Ability to form effective partnerships with all stakeholders.
  • Effectively problem solve with the ability to proactively address issues preventing escalation.

 

Physical Environment/Working Conditions
